Compact Crankset on the Cheap ?
Quick question... Can I convert my regular double crankset to a compact?
I.e., can I just slap 50/34 rings on it?

The logic of a compact crankset is that it employs the now-lesser-used 110mm BCD. This gives the ring a smaller inner diameter, and therefore allows for fewer teeth (smaller circumfrance). Assuming that you can find rings the size you want with the correct bcd for your crankarm spider, there's no problem. Instructions for determining your current BCD can be found at http://sheldonbrown.com/gloss_bo-z.html#bcd
