Mountain bike tires for dry + rocky conditions

I read in Bicyling that the Hutchinson Python is the way to go for dry Colorado. In the little mountain biking I've done it seems that the widely spaced knobs (meant to shed mud) don't grip as well on the Rocky stuff. Got a favorite tire?

You're right... the pythons are poor for local riding. I swear by Continental Vertical Pros. I had a chance to ride a Continental Diesel in Crested Butte. At 2.5 it is an amazing tire. Definately more freeride than XC. I plan to put a Diesel on the front for next year. I primarily ride White Ranch, Walker and Hall.

I mention this because it seems that wide-spaced knobs, as on the Bontrager Jones ACX (which really sucked for me) don't work well. Ditto for the Hutchinson Mosquito, I'll bet. Any comments on Panaracers, Geax, or Michelins?
